375k! The last goal unlocked - doubling down on Creative Commons releases - the Kibbles' Reference Document
almost 2 years ago – Tue, Feb 28, 2023 at 03:50:51 PM

Hey Folks-

This is way faster than expected so I'll have to keep this brief, but I wanted to get this goal up.

This won't be the biggest goal for everyone, but given that history of this project and what got the ball rolling on it, I think this would be an appropriate way to cap it off - a nod to what I think (and hope) the future of 5e will be under the Creative Commons.

If we reach 400k, I'll more than double down on the 250+ spells being released into the Creative Commons. I will create and release an entire Kibbles' Reference Document for anyone to use as an extension or addition to the 5e SRD in Creative Commons for any purpose (under CC-BY-4.0). This will include, at minimum, all 6 of my classes (the 4 from this Kickstarter + Psion and Inventor from last Kickstarter) with at least 1 of their subclasses each, the Feats from this book, all subclasses currently listed under Kibbles' Generic Subclasses, and more, totaling over 100 pages of content that will be complete free for anyone to use anything - commercial or otherwise. Character building apps, video games, your own books, homebrew, etc - anything, with no further permissions needed.

I'll be honest that this is one I've had to think about a lot; if that's something I really wanted to say I'd do. There's a reason this comes last, as when things are released into the creative commons, there's no going back from that, and releasing this much content is giving away a lot of my stuff. While my content is unofficially generally free, this would make a huge swath of it officially (and irrevocably) free.

But that's sort of the point of Kickstarter isn't it. You folks are giving me the money ahead of time, so I don't need to focus on selling my content so much. I'm a big fan of the creative commons and the idea of folks releasing stuff into that, and if I'm going to say it, it makes sense to do it myself.

So... let's see if we can hit 400K, and if we do, I'll make the Kibbles' Reference Document a thing. The finalized version of that document should be expected to be released around the time of the final PDF, but I will compile a partial draft within a few months of the Kickstarter if we reach it.

So there you have it folks; we are in the final stretch now. Thank you for all the support - and let's see if we can make it to a truly absurd milestone.

369K! 6K Backers! Closing in on revealing the final stretch goal and the 48 hour mark!
almost 2 years ago – Tue, Feb 28, 2023 at 12:04:27 PM

Hey Folks-

Monster Mutations!

We've smashed right through 350K, and unlocked Monster Mutations!

  • 350K: Monster Mutations, Feats for Monsters 2! It sounds like the players are getting a lot of cool toys, so let's beef up the monster tools yet again with another set of feats for monsters allowing you to run various mutant versions with special dangerous (and often magical!) abilities!

This is doubling down on Monster Feats, with a unique twist, unlocking a huge array of new drag and drop abilities for monsters. Empower anything into a monster your players are bound to remember... I'll leave it up to each DM if they want to claim diabolical credit or pass the buck to me when their players rue the day Monster Feats became a thing!

These are going to have some very special abilities, with some detailed notes about them I'll develop in testing them about their expected impact on encounters, divided up into "Interesting", "Challenging", and "Dangerous" mutations (probably, still working out that system!).

The 48 Hour Mark is Rapidly Approaching!

We are entering the final stretch, with just 2 stretch goals left! I think we have the 375K one lined up, but not sure about the second one. Now is the time to get the last call out to folks. Not only is this the time to help make the final push for stretch goals, but this is the last chance to get in as a voter for all those Voter Choice rounds!

Regarding the Voter's Choice rounds, those will take place in the weeks after the Kickstarter, but remember that you can submit your ideas already! You can only vote once in the polls (they'll be validated against backer emails), but you can submit as many ideas as you want. Note that not all ideas will make it through, though many well - I have to be confident I can make a good version of the idea after all, and with hundreds of ideas there's got to be a bit of filtering first so the vote isn't impossible. Voting will allow folks to pick many options, with the ones getting the most votes getting through (...but not ranked choice, that's too complicated for my poll making skills!)

The last stretch goal, should we get there, will be to release even more into the Creative Commons.

Kickstarter Shoutout

Today I have Phaylen's Journal of Extraordinary Items for 5E for you! This is a massive book of magic items (101+ items!), including add-ons for item cards and an early bird discount for a set of icy dice!

They have had a great start and a huge list of stretch goals lined up, so if you're looking for magic items, expanded tool use, their own whole crafting system, and more, drop by and check out what they have!

Wrap Up

Thank you all for the support! I am looking forward to getting you folks a truly massive book.  I have no idea how the final 48 hours will go, but I can say with great certainty that we've already achieved a massive success that will get a great book into your hands.

Expect it to take at least a few days and maybe up to a week or two for the Backerkit pledge manager to get set up, but do expect regular updates throughout the Kickstarter. I will probably do updates roughly monthly, particularly as we start getting closer to the delivery window (...folks from the last Kickstarter remember those; if we happen to go over the delivery window, you'll definitely be hearing from my monthly status and progress reports, though I don't expect that this time around!)

All the best,

325K! Redemption Round achieved! New stretch goals unlocked!
almost 2 years ago – Fri, Feb 24, 2023 at 02:19:11 PM

Hey Folks-

Stretch Goals

Ya'll chewed through that one so fast that even though we are in the last week I figured I should shore this up with a few more stretch goals! I've added two new stretch goals:

  • 350K: Monster Mutations, Feats for Monsters 2! It sounds like the players are getting a lot of cool toys, so let's beef up the monster tools yet again with another set of feats for monsters allowing you to run various mutant versions with special dangerous (and often magical!) abilities!
  • 375K: Redemption Round++! People really enjoyed the idea of the redemption round, so let's keep saving stuff from the cutting room floor! If we reach this we'll save twice as many subclasses (at least one runner up AND at least one wildcard), and a spell theme!

And one final locked stretch goal at ??? to serve as our final(?) stretch goal if need be! I think I've said the word final before, so we'll see when (or if!) it sticks!

I'll say that the last hidden goal is a little different from the others, but I did mention we could potentially see more Creative Commons related stretch goals, so I'll leave that as a hint for if we get there.

Artists Hard At Work!

Of course I'm not waiting for the Kickstarter to end to send more work to the artists. Getting all the art fleshed out is one of things that'll take awhile, but here's a quick look at some of the new art pouring in!

Kickstarter Shoutouts

Today will be a little brief as I try to get this update out, but I have two 5e entries from the one going #ZineQuest that have reached out to me that I'm happy to share out!

These both look like excellent and creative adventures with a lot of new stuff to offer, and are levels 4-6 and 5-7 respectively, so both look like they fall into that popular sweet spot many folks favor adventuring, so if either of those look interesting, go check them out and give them a boost! Both are small Kickstarters where every set of eyes counts :)

Until Next Time

...which at the rate we are going and closing out this Kickstarter might not be all that long! I'm hoping to bring you a few more things before the end of the Kickstarter, but it's always a whirlwind of activity and I'm just one bloke doing my best to get back to everyone and keep the plates spinning :)

As always, if you have any thoughts, questions, or feedback, my messages are always open here or even better over on my Discord, where I can usually be found.

I simply cannot end an update without saying thank you for all the support and helping get the word out. You folks make this happen!

All the best,

300K! The bestiary is in business! Next stretch goal locked in!
almost 2 years ago – Wed, Feb 22, 2023 at 02:33:58 PM

Hey Folks-

Next Stretch Goal

What an incredible milestone. Surpassing the last Kickstarter and hitting the 200K it just barely missed was incredible, and you've just gone ahead and marched right through half again that! We've surpassed not just my conservative estimates, optimistic and wildest ones too now.

But at the end of the day, I love making stuff for folks to use, so if you keep finding new folks to join the party, I'll keep adding stuff to the pile. I have a pretty good idea what it takes to make a book this time around, and while the vast sea of new stuff may move it back a bit, I don't expect any significant delays.

So... let's keep piling on and see where this book gets to.

  • 325: The Redemption Round. What if the Voter's Choice picks the wrong subclass?! Now you have another shot to make sure your favorite pick makes it through with the Redemption Round, but it'll have new competition in the form of the Wild Card submissions folks have made along the way in one final Voter's Choice round of epic proportions: Runner Ups vs. Wild Cards in one last vote.

Magic Items

I also want to take this chance to go back to a stretch goal back at the dawn of time when this was a wee little Kickstarter at 60K to announce that I'll be working with the immensely talented Dungeon Strugglers on providing those magic items, with excellent top notch art.

You may remember them from my last Kickstarter, where they produced some incredible things for the book, such as Arcblade, Lost Era Magitech Blaster, and the bestest item ever, Breastplate of the Golden Retriever.

This will once more bring their talents to this book when it comes to bringing to life the Magic Item Stretch Goals. If you want to see more of what they do, they are wonderful creators that can be found on Instagram here (where I've linked to the full item info for Breastplate of the Golden Retriever! They hare a ton of great art and free items over there) or their patreon here.

Now, as I like to do in these updates...

Kickstarter Shoutout!

Today I have a particularly unique one for you with tons of new 5e content, and some very dynamic options Legend of Keepers 5E Reverse Dungeon and STL Miniatures. The good folks here reached out to me and asked me to share it out, which I'm happy to do because it looks like there is a lot going on here!

  • Unique modes of play for 5e where you can play as the Heroes, the Monsters, or both (or even solo)
  • Tons of art and STL files (300+ STL files, and these do look like pretty nice models!)
  • 500 illustrations, customizable dungeons, premade NPCs, all totalling to 350+  pages of stuff.

As per the page "Legend of Keepers is a 5E compatible series of four unique reverse dungeon adventures inspired by the Legend of Keepers video game by Goblinz Studio."

This one definitely looks interesting, so if playing the monsters or a massive pile of STL files grabs your attention, definitely go check it out.

Wrap Up

If I'm going to sound like a broken record, thank you all for your support once more and making this Kickstarter an amazing one, I'm glad that's the part of the record I broke on because it merits repeating each time!

This success is really down to all the folks that make this happen; even knowing the biggest source of backers is just folks sharing out this Kickstarter, and that's pretty unique; it's the reason we've had just such amazing continued day after day growth.

You folks keep making the funding number go up, and I'll keep making the page count go up with more cool stuff, and loading this book up with ever more art, options, and new things to play with.

All the best,

-Kibbles

275K! Even the dead are waking up to get in on the book!
almost 2 years ago – Sun, Feb 19, 2023 at 01:16:40 PM

Hey Folks,

275K and another Stretch Goal Down!

We've unlocked the first new playable race option for the book - The Awakened Undead; even death cannot end legacies now! This is a new modular character option that provides a unique option.

As I always caution with this sort of thing, this will be geared to be a well balanced option, by the time you're playing an undead character, you are deep  into "check with your DM if this is the right campaign for this character option" territory. There's definitely causes where I wouldn't allow it just for thematic reasons, but also ones where it would present any number of interesting circumstances, or provide a unique way to continue a character's legacies, generate unique side characters, or tell a story that'd otherwise go untold!

We now have the Bestiary+ in sight, and with that comes a selection of new monsters to shore up the DMs adrenal - some will feature Feats for Monsters in their natural habitats giving DMs some examples to work, others will be NPC/monster bloke versions of the new classes, and others still will be entirely unique challenges! I'm told that the monsters from the last book have gotten a lot of use (...and may have racked up a bit of a kill count...) so use with caution! They are balanced to their calculated CR, but devised by a devious bloke that wrings that CR for all its worth sometimes... (...that'd be me).

It's simply incredible that we are looking at closing in on 300K. I was hoping this KS would make it to 60K, but I set the minimum to 20K because I just wanted to be safe and wasn't sure I could deliver for less than that, and thought with everything going on it wasn't impossible I'd be in that spot, so to now only meet and exceed the last Kickstarter but to be blowing it out of the water is a surprise, and very welcome one at that.

I will hopefully have Battle System Alpha 2 for you up next week, and for people that want to get the earliest possible look at stuff as it rolls off the presses, stop by the Discord and grab the "Draft Notification" role for the updates in #kibbles-drafting-room; of course, that'll all come to you good folks here on Kickstarter and through Backerkit for the more patient!

Now, as I like to do in these updates...

Kickstarter Shoutouts!

Yes, that's with an "s" I have two for you today!

Villains & Villagers - System Neutral Fantasy NPC Supplement

Tips, Tables, and Townsfolk for Any Fantasy RPG. Make unique, interesting, and memorable NPCs while saving time on your game prep.

Here we have a supplement geared around NPC generation; piles of premade NPCs with art, battlemaps, and a tons of tables for quick generation, and plenty more. If that sounds like something you could use to enhance your game, head over to check out their KS!

Death Dealing: A card-throwing rogue subclass for 5E!

Plus new spells, magic items, and creatures! #ZineQuest

This Kickstarter is a #ZineQuest entry and thus a bite sized Kickstarter, but as big a bite as one can get with the whole nine-yards for a subclass, including Minis (or STLs), printed booklets, and more. If you're looking for a deep dive into a card-slinging Rogue, take a look; it looks like it has a pretty lightning quick turn around on digital goods, so you won't have to wait too long.

That's it for this update!

And with that I'll leave you folks to your weekend!

Thank you all for getting the word out and making this Kickstarter a huge success - it just keeps going, and has barely slowed down in momentum even as we've hit the middle of the Kickstarter that usually drags on a bit, it just keeps chugging through stretch goal after stretch goal!

All the best,

-Kibbles
